A/F.O.T.T.® | Face
Three-day interdisciplinary course on the assessment and treatment of patients with cerebral sensory-motor and perceptual impairments of the face after acquired brain injury, based on the concept of Kay Coombes.

Physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, registered nurses, physicians
Participation requirement
Participation in a F.O.T.T.® Ground Course. The e-learning module for the F.O.T.T.® Ground Course is recommended.
Course leaders/Number of participants
1 F.O.T.T.® Senior Instructor with 10 to 12 participants or 2 F.O.T.T.® Senior Instructors with 14 participants.
Course aims and objectives
- Develop an understanding of the functional and everyday relevance of the face for facial expression, eye protection, articulation, food intake and oral care
- Participants can form and verify hypotheses regarding: Main problems, treatment plan and therapy
- Participants understand the importance of an individual home programme and identify specific interventions for an independent or supervised home programme for the patient treated in the course
Course content
- Functions of the facial muscles
- The importance of facial paralysis for activities and participation in everyday life and resulting problems
- The protection of the eyes in peripheral facial palsy
- Facial nerve and trigeminal nerve: course and significance for facial functions
- Neurodynamic aspects of facial treatment
- Supporting treatment with a facial manual
- Supervised patient treatment in pairs or threesomes
Methods
- Teaching theoretical knowledge, self-experience and practical work of the participants with each other under supervision of the course instructor
- Assessment and treatment of patients by the course participants, under supervision of the course leader and subsequent video analysis
