A/F.O.T.T.® | Clinical Reasoning
Four-day interprofessional course on the assessment and treatment of patients after acquired brain injury, based on the concept of Kay Coombes.
Target group
Physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, registered nurses
Participation requirement
Participation in a F.O.T.T.® Ground Course. The e-learning module for the F.O.T.T.® Ground Course is recommended.

2 F.O.T.T.® Instructors with 18 participants or 1 F.O.T.T.® Senior Instructor with 12 participants
Course aims and objectives
- Apply the F.O.T.T.® algorithm in clinical reasoning to the assessment and treatment of patients with neurogenic problems in the facio-oral tract
- Set SMART goals and be able to define and follow a treatment plan based on the assessment of the patient
- Develop and expand practical skills in F.O.T.T.® in patient-related workshops
Course content
- Review and update of relevant principles, methods and techniques in F.O.T.T.®
- Presentation of the F.O.T.T.® algorithm and application of the algorithm in clinical work with patients
- Video analysis of important sequences and problems in the assessment and treatment of patients
- Deepening the understanding of functional relationships between swallowing, food intake and breathing
- Development of practical skills in patient-related workshops and their application in patient treatment
Methods
- Teaching theoretical knowledge, self-experience and practical work of the participants with each other under supervision of the course instructor
- Application of the F.O.T.T.® algorithm to the patients treated during the course
- Assessment and treatment of patients by the course participants, under supervision of the course leader and subsequent video analysis
